BUT... I don't see any processes in task manager that have constantly increasing memory use. I would never have thought the DVD drive had anything to do with the HDD light staying on. but no amount of disk fixing made the light go off.

What are your suggestions? My Antivirus is updated too and my system is not infected. If you have less than 4GB installed, see if you can increase memory to 4GB. Look in CPU column and see if there are any processes that constantly take about 10% or more. It's loading system DLLs, accessing registry keys, and other nonsense. I did my things and turned off the computer normally. Several functions may not work. When I disconnected it, the HD drive light went off. It's something related to the system process, and it even occurs in safe mode, so I don't think it's a third party software problem. Any ideas on what should cause so much thrashing? Do you have any processes who's memory use is constantly increasing without fluctuations? You were lucky it was able to get through that. Sometimes when i download files, the hdd will suddenly disappear.
When I disconnected it, the HD drive light went off. and my other drives... Also, ever since it started, my computer is very slow. Even if that sector on the drive is failing.
The hard drive light stays on permanently after start up and the computer is very slow, but I don't think there is any drive activity.
