win8.1 still updates quickly as found that out on a customer's laptop last month. Everytime I do a clean install eveything works fine except the Windows Update which gets stuck at "Checking for Updates" forever with almost 50% constant CPU usage of its process. I have spent much time previously trying get Windows Updater to work properly. and annoying too.
MS says you have to get it from Dell, and Dell won't "give" it to you. Do not try to run the stand alone updater before you reboot.Once the computer comes up again you can install one patch.
