I share your feelings of wanting to sue them for time!!!!! Microsoft has already acknowledged the issue and they are investigating it. Time to reinstall lIve mail for all my non microsoft accounts. I removed the email account and added it again, and it now works as it did before this debacle.
Go do something since it may take awhile to download your mail. Hopefully you don't do the update. Once you have downloaded your emails using the new settings, you can use the mouse to drag-and-drop emails across from the “old” Microsoft account, but don’t delete it.
Either way, it is a slightly awkward choice: you can upgrade to Outlook or downgrade to Mail, but you can’t stay at the same level. Now you can export your desired accounts and emails. Of course, rather than switching to the Mail app or Microsoft Office Outlook you could switch to an alternative from a third-party supplier. Also, I wonder if Windows Mail from Windows Vista will continue to work.

I'm sure this is common sense, but it should be stated that you should only delete the account in livemail, and not hotmail/outlook.com, as that would result in the permanent loss Select Contacts. Apparently they have switched the imap to IMAP in capitals, so instead of using imap-mail.outlook.com (Port 993) I used IMAP-mail.outlook.com (Port 993) and problem solved, all is now working well. :)
