I googled the problem but no help as the assume that the f keys are working! I tried MS fixit, manual updates, deleting the SoftwareDistribution files, sfc /scannow, checking for malware, and fixing fix BITS all to no avail. Both CPU and memory usage rose and fell constantly. Then I went back to "Control Panel - Windows Update - Change Settings" and set it to "Check For Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and http://themenage.com/windows-update/windows-update-hangs-cpu-hot.html
M E ROBERTS Thanks for the help . You'll need to check whether you're running a 32-bit version of Windows or a 64-bit version and download the appropriate updates for your PC. You might have to run this installer more than once due to the fact that SP1 has to be installed first. try method 4 as you described, part 1 - download finished successfully.
